What is Hyperbaric oxygen Therapy (HBOT) ?
HBOT is an abbreviation for Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a medical treatment which enhances the body’s natural healing process by delivering oxygen under pressure, increasing the oxygen content in the blood and in the cerebral spinal fluid.
How does Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy work?
Hyperoxygenation - By increasing the oxygen dissolved in the plasma (the liquid portion of the blood), the lymphatic fluid, and the cerebrospinal fluid, HBOT increases the oxygen available to damaged tissues, stimulating healing.
Neovascularization - HBOT stimulates blood vessel formation (angiogenesis) and collagen (connective tissue) formation in areas that were previously resistant due to lack of oxygen.
Hyperoxia enhanced antimicrobial activity - HBOT reduces or eliminates the effects of toxic substances by increasing the tissue oxygen levels.
Hyperoxia enhanced immune response - HBOT activates the white blood cells to fight infection, promoting resistance to infection, as well as wound healing. HBOT also helps to reduce inflammation and oxidative stress.
What is a Monoplace Hyperbaric chamber?
Monoplace chambers accommodates only one patient are usually compressed with pure oxygen and breath pure oxygen. Modern monoplace chambers are enhanced with features like intravenous infusion, trancutaneous and other monitoring, ventilation, intercom for two-way conversation, Audio input, TV screens for entertainment etc. These chambers are pressurized upto 3 ATA
What is a Multiplace Hyperbaric Chamber?
Multiplace chambers are compressed with air for economic reasons and then the patient breathes 100% oxygen through a hood or mask at the desired pressure. Normally these are designed to capacitate 4 to 20 patients at a time. Designs also vary from pressures of 3 ATA to 6 ATA
What is a Hybrid Chamber?
These are monoplace chambers compressed with air (instead of oxygen) and the patient breaths 100% oxygen through an oxygen circuit. This enables very low consumption of oxygen. These systems are highly recommended for stand alone clinics where oxygen supplies are minimal. Designs are made upto 3 ATA
How does HBOT treat so many different conditions?
HBOT treats the underlying disease process that causes and perpetuates a wide variety of chronic conditions. HBOT is used therapeutically to treat conditions in which tissues have been damaged by oxygen deprivation. When the oxygen is restored to these tissues, much of the lost function returns. HBOT also helps to reduce inflammation and promote wound healing throughout the body and in the brain. There are over several thousands of published scientific studies on HBOT.
